The Lake complements its beauty with panoramic roads, beaches, riverside towns, mountains, and volcanoes. It offers excellent opportunities to develop sports fishing, sailing, kayaking, free flight, water skiing, and naturalistic recreation, as well as visiting the Mayan populations of the area.

Surrounded by valleys with mountains serrating the horizons, Chichicastenango can seem isolated in time and space from the rest of Guatemala. Masheños (citizens of Chichicastenango) are famous for their adherence to pre-Christian beliefs and ceremonies, and the town's various cofradías (religious brotherhoods) hold processions in observance of their saints around the church of Santo Tomás.
